Adding co-ordinates on a Wikipedia page!

So I happen to discover this category of articles lacking co-ordinates while browsing Wikipedia! I went down to the Maharashtra category and found more than 1700 articles under it. I’ve taken up this task to add the co-ordinates for Maharashtra related articles. So I searched for available options and found a simple way to add them. Here’s a simple ( yeah, really simple) guide to do it –

    1. Open up Google maps. Search for the location. The search will give you the place with a marker ‘A’.
    2. Right click on that pink colored ‘A’ and select ‘Whats here?’. This will give you the co-ordinates (latitude and longitude) of that place in the search box, where you previously entered the desired location.
    3. These figures are in degrees. To get a more detailed format (deg-min-secs), I used Geolocator tool. Simply copy paste the obtained co-ordinates into the text box on GeoLocator website and click Apply.
    4. This converts the co-ordinates into degrees-minutes-seconds format and produces the same in the templates listed under ‘ Basic wikipedia/commons templates’. Select the second option under that section.
    5. Copy the template, leave that window, go to the Wiki article, hit the edit button and paste it anywhere!
      Note: Remember to remove the {{coord missing}} template from the article once you have added the co-ordinates πŸ™‚

That’s it! πŸ™‚ A small demo of the process –

Article : Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Engineering (Mumbai)
Google Maps gives : 19.027231,73.055084
GeoLocater gives : {{coord|19|1|38.03|N|73|3|18.3|E|region:IN|display=title}}

Paste this into the article and remove the co-ordinate missing template. πŸ™‚

This is a good and simple way to contribute to Wikipedia, worlds largest free knowledge repository! All it involves is copy-pasting and we are all good at it πŸ˜‰

I hope you will take up this task and add co-ordinates to articles of your region (to start off with) and also help me with Maharashtra πŸ™‚ I’m done with around 100 articles πŸ™‚

If you have a relatively simpler approach to get the job done, do share it with us πŸ™‚

Till then, Cheers! πŸ™‚
